'Donbass republics DPR and LPR must be eliminated' - US special representative for Ukraine

Special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine Kurt Volker stated that the DPR and the LPR must be liquidated, since they do not correspond to the Constitution of Ukraine. He expressed this opinion during a panel discussion at the analytical center of the Hudson Institute.

"The so-called Lugansk People's Republic and Donetsk People's Republic are the formations created by Russia in order to help disguise the role of the Russian Federation and to strengthen the ongoing conflict, and they must be eliminated," Volker said.

"There is no place for them in the Ukrainian constitutional order. The Minsk agreements are aimed at restoring the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and these entities must disappear," the US special envoy noted.

In addition, during the discussion, Kurt Volker also stated that it may take six months for the preparation of local elections in certain areas of Donetsk and Lugansk regions after the full deployment of the peacekeeping forces.

He expressed hope that the UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass would become a means for the implementation of the Minsk agreements. In particular, he said, the assistance of the peacekeeping mission in the implementation of the Minsk agreements should create a transitional period for the transfer of control in Donbass, first from Russia to the UN, and then to Ukraine.

The transfer of UN control over certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions he called an intermediate stage "during which local elections will be organized and held, when there will be security, when amnesty will be provided to the persons who committed crimes that are part of the conflict, when a special status will be fixed ".

"And then the transition to Ukrainian control," Volker said.

DPR chief negotiator suggests US focus on Kiev’s aggression

The United States should better do something about Kiev’s aggressive actions and violations of the Minsk agreements rather than think about "disbanding" the republics of Donbass, Denis Pushilin, who leads a delegation of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) to the peace talks in Minsk, said on Sunday, commenting on pronouncements by US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker, reports TASS.

"If Mr. Volker really wants a peace resolution to the conflict, he should better focus attention on his advisees, on Ukraine, on Kiev’s systemic violations of its liabilities under the Minsk agreements. It would be much more paying," Pushilin was quoted as saying.
