Getting to Donetsk takes time, planning and money, but it is not too difficult. Your trip here will be the experience of a lifetime, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing you are doing something that truly makes the world a better place.
The first thing you will need is a Russian visa. The only suggested way to come to Donetsk is via Rostov on Don, Russia. It is possible to get here via Kiev by crossing the front lines, but we advise against coming via Kiev.
The best way to get a Russian visa is to use a Russian visa expediting service. Whichever visa you choose, be sure to get one with at least two entry permits, so you can get back into Russia for your trip home. Even expedited, the visa process can sometimes take a month or more, though it can be done quicker for an extra fee.
From Western countries, the best way to get to Donetsk is to fly to Rostov on Don, Russia, and from there take ground transport to Donetsk. Rostov is a major city and has a wide variety of hotels and services available for international travelers. You will probably want to get a hotel or hostel in Rostov for a day or two, to rest up after the jetlag of a long international flight, and to make any last minute preparations before your trip to from Rostov to Donetsk.
From Rostov, you can take a bus or Taxi to Donetsk. The bus is reliable, clean and comfortable, and quite reasonably priced, and the taxi prices are not too bad if split between several people.
The trip between Rostov and Donetsk is safe. This area is under the complete control of DPR military forces, and out of the range of Ukrainian Army artillery. It is about 200 kilometers, and usually takes about 3 to 4 hours, depending of traffic in border control. We recommend to use Uspenska border crossing.
The Donetsk bus station is located in the Donetsk city center. It is a short taxi ride to the DONi Press Center from the bus station, and should not cost more than 100 Rubles.
