Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in NATO-Ukraine Comission meeting in Brussel on Wednesday, that NATO confirms its unwavering support for Ukraine. "Today we discussed Russia’s continued aggressive actions, the importance of implementing the Minsk Agreements and NATO’s enduring support for Ukraine", Stoltenberg said in press-conference.
Stoltenberg said that "NATO Allies do not – and will not – recognise Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea". He also directly accused Russia from the raging war in Donbass. Stoltenberg had a meeting on Wednesday with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin.
"As a first step, we need to see an immediate and full ceasefire. In the meantime, the international community must keep pressuring Russia to respect its obligations. Especially while the security situation in eastern Ukraine remains so serious, it is important that economic sanctions be maintained", Stoltenberg said.
The NATO military support package for Ukraine (Comprehensive Assistance Package, July 9, 2016), which is now in implementation, includes financial support and military support for the Ukrainian armed forces. Package includes 13 main programs, like trust funds for financing cyber security programs, command control systems, defence technical cooperation, military logistics, demining and army medical programs.
"NATO Allies continue to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and we support reforms that are essential for a better future for the people of Ukraine," Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.
DONi News editor's comment:
It should be noted and always remembered, that Russia is not a party in the Minsk Agreement. This important information is always missing in the western news and statements concerning the issue. It's undeniable, that Russia is not even mentioned in any of the Minsk Agreement documents, which are signed by the Ukraine and two Donbass people's republics, Donetsk and Lugansk. Actually Russia's role in arranging Minsk truce negotiations was equal to other observers, France and Germany.
This means, that the only way to settle conflict in Donbass by diplomatic means starts from inviting legal representatives from Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics to the negotiation table, and then pressure Kiev to implement even the first step from Minsk Agreement, which was agreed first in 2014, and then again in 2015. How it is even possible for NATO to demand Russia to follow agreement, which it has not signed?
"Ukrainian forces shelled frontline areas of the Donetsk People’s Republic 2,453 times over the past 24 hours, injuring one militiaman, DPR Operations Command deputy commander Eduard Basurin told a news briefing on Wednesday", enough said?
