FRG insists on UN mission for peacekeeping, not for OSCE protection in Donbass

The UN mission should be introduced to the entire territory of Donbass, where there is an armed conflict, and not only to the contact line for the purpose of protecting the observers of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM). German Foreign Minister Zigmar Gabriel said this in Kiev on Wednesday at a joint briefing with Ukrainian counterpart Pavel Klimkin.

"It is necessary that there be an armed and powerful UN mission that would be in the entire territory [of Donbass], not only to guard a small group of representatives of the OSCE mission and be only on the contact line as the new border of Ukraine," the German foreign minister said.

He added that the FRG would promote this idea in the UN Security Council.

"We will try to push UN peacekeeping mission in Donbass with our French colleagues and all those who are members of the UN Security Council," Gabriel stressed.

Obligatory conditions for the possibility of introducing such a UN mission in Donbass, he said, are "a lengthy armistice and the withdrawal of heavy weapons."
